  • GALENA - Two Galena residents were arrested Wednesday evening as part of what Galena Police Chief Larry Delmont termed one of the most sophisticated marijuana growing operations he'd seen.
Chris D. DeGraff, 59, and Jana L. DeGraff 56, both, of 612 McKinley Lane, in Galena were arrested about 7:14 p.m. Wednesday after the execution of a search warrant at their home.
The investigation by the Galena Police Department with assistance from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation had been on-going for several months.
The DeGraffs were arrested on formal charges of unlawful possession of certain drug precursors and drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of controlled substance, unlawful cultivation or distribution of controlled substance and no drug tax stamp.
Delmont said the property had motion sensors and an electronic gate controlled with entry codes as well as four pit bulls on the premises. He said the dogs have been taken to the Joplin Humane Society and are illegal to own in Galena.
Delmont said 17 compressed blocks of marijuana, several plants in cultivation stage, several plants in the hanging/drying process, jars filled with buds of marijuana, cash and a few rifles were allegedly removed from the property. Each block weighs about one pound.
Additionally, Delmont said, the Kansas Department of Revenue issued a tax warrant and property was seized from the residence including $2,195 in cash, a 1975 Chevy Corvette, a 1988 Cadillac Deville, bank accounts and a lean on the property.
Delmont also said 31 pounds of contraband were seized with an estimated street value of $31,000.
"This is the biggest bust I have seen in my years of police enforcement," Delmont said.
GPD is currently waiting on a destroy order from the KBI, which will allow the pot to be burned in a closed incinerator in a safe environment.
The DeGraffs were released fromt= Cherokee County Jail at 10:55 a.m Thursday on $65,128 bond.
