“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
We know if we accept Christ as our Savior, we experience salvation. It is the regenerating work of the Spirit that makes us a new creation. The old is gone and the new comes. We become a new life of faith on the Son of God, who gave His life for us.
As I pondered on the “old being replaced with the new,” I thought of the recent “Cash for Clunkers” program that was offered by the car dealers, as a result of government influence. I began thinking about a greater program, which I now call, “Christ for Clunkers.”
Some would say that spiritually we start life as a clunker, who is born into sin. We may appear shiny and beautiful, but in time, we receive blemishes which comes with the perils of life.
The car salesman who was wanting to sell a customer a new car had a great pitch: “Do I have the deal for you!” There was a warranty for different parts of the automobile lasting a period of time. The salesman made the offer sound good, one which was hard to resist.
As a pastor, let me tell you that I know of a better deal: It’s called “Christ for Clunkers.” The warranty is for the rest of life and even better than that - it lasts for eternity. Physically, we may end life banged up, and some may say we are clunkers. However, by having the Holy Spirit we will be “turbo-charged.” We will have awesome power.
Yes, a Christian may get older physically over time, as a car does. We may become victims of the “B’s” of aging: bifocals, bunions, bulges, bridges, and baldness. However, we remain rich and beautiful, as a result of having Jesus.
I know there will come a time, when some people will say I am “over the hill.” That could be a good thing. Climbing the hill usually takes effort. Over the hill and going down might be a thrill requiring less effort. However, if the brakes go out, let’s praise the Lord with a shout! We must not worry, because Christ made us new and we are headed beyond the blue.”
