BAXTER SPRINGS - A half cent sales tax raise is being considered by the City of Baxter Springs.

The potential increase was brought up at last week's council meeting for members to begin thinking on, though the earliest the issue could be voted on would be next November's ballot.

Most of the council members were in agreement that they disliked the idea of the raise, but options are limited and it may be unavoidable. The city is still recovering from the loss of sales tax revenue that was brought in by Walmart. Since the company closed the Baxter Springs store in April 2015, the city has struggled to make up for the loss.

Mayor Randy Trease asked the members of the council to consider this heavily, and reach a decision by February.
