CHEROKEE - Baxter Springs added two more wins on the road last week, downing Riverton 57-33 and Cherokee-Southeast 66-49. The Lions are now 14-5 for the season.

With no score for the last three minutes in Riverton, the Lions held a slim 11-8 lead after the first quarter, Baxter Springs took a 26-17 advantage going into the half. The Rams were held to 16 points in the second half.

The Lions junior Max Sheffer had a break out game scoring 22 points, followed by Garrett Shafer with 21. Trey White and Kaid Karnes each added 10 points each for the Lions. Levi Zustiak and Carson Shockley led the Rams with 7 points each.

Against Cherokee-Southeast Lancers White put Baxter Springs up 5-0 with a trey and a steal and a lay-up within the first 45 seconds. The Lancers Caleb Fenimore answered back with his own 3-pointer. Sheffer and Shafer each scored before Southeast’s Colton Trejo and Jake Burns brought the Lancers down 9-7. For the Lions Brant Trease brought the Lions to 11 to end the opening period.

After Hayden Wilson scored for the Lancers ninth point. Shafer scored, and Cole Burdette did for Southeast for a Lion lead 13-11. The Lancers took the lead 18-16 with 2 minutes left in the half after Burdette’s 3 and 2, and Trejo’s field goal. The Lions went on a 7-0 run with Shafer’s two field goals, and White’s trey. At the half time buzzer Fenimore hit a 3-pointer to cut Baxter Springs lead 25-23.

Within 15 second of the third quarter Brett Malle tied the game at 25. Sheffer, who finished with 14 points for the evening, hit two free throws and a put back basket. Fenimore connected on two free throws, and with 5:25 left in the period Dylan Wilson knotted the game at 29.

The Lancers managed only one field goal by Wilson the remainder of the quarter. The Lions went on another run, this time with 10 points to lead 39-31. In the run Shafer hit three field goals, Trease made two free throws, and White added a basket. White finished with three free throws, and Trease connected on two free throws after a technical foul called on a Lancer player.

After the 42-31 lead going into the fourth for Baxter Springs, Southeast couldn’t climb out of the hole. Gutsy senior Burdette tried to get the Lancers on track scoring 10 of his game high 23 points in the fourth quarter, but it just wasn’t enough. Fenimore finished with 13 points, including a 3-pointer in the fourth.

The Lions had four players in double figures led by Shafer with 23. White had three treys for 15, and Sheffer finished with 14. With 6 free throws Trease added 10 points for the Lions.

Baxter Springs will play in the Kansas Class 4A Division II sub-state in Girard on Thursday, March 2. Teams and seeding are to be determined.
