GIRARD - Baxter Springs entered as the favorite last week in the Kansas 4A Division II Sub State played in Girard. The Lions started right by defeating Columbus on Thursday 51-33. Columbus finished the season 3-17. Baxter Springs was upset by Frontenac 59-32 in the Saturday championship game.
Against Columbus, after the Lions Garrett Shafer and Brant Trease baskets, the Titans Coltin Laurance put Columbus up for their only lead of the game 5-4. Kaid Karnes scored the Lions, then they went on a 7-0 run to increase their lead 14-5. The Lions finished the opening period 16-7, and finished the half at 24-15. It was the Lions ahead 39-24 after three quarters.
Shafer led the Lions in scoring with 15 points. Karnes finished with 12, and Max Sheffer added 10. Junior Laurance had a big season ending game with 19 points for the Titans.
In the championship game against Frontenac, Trease started the game scoring, then it was all Frontenac the remainder of the opening period when the Raiders went up 16-6.
Sheffer started the second quarter with a field goal. The Raiders Issac Bicknell made good on a trey, as did Baxter Springs Trey White for a 19-11 score. With the score 22-13 Shaffer scored again, Mason Hartley pulled a lay up after his steal, and Shafer made good on a plus-1 to inch closer 22-18.
The half ended with Baxter Springs still in the game being down 27-19. Then the Lion wagon lost it’s wheels. In the first six minutes of the third period the Raiders dropped in 14 points, and Baxter Springs managed 4. Things didn’t get better for the Lions as the final score indicates.
Junior Trease finished with 8 points, and junior Preston Landis added 6. Big men Shafer and Sheffer were held to 5 and 4 points respectively.
