BAXTER SPRINGS - The Lady Bulldogs of Galena came to Baxter Springs on May 1, and left the Field of Dreams with a spilt in the double header. Baxter Springs pulled out a 7-5 win in the opener, and with a seventh inning run-away, Galena won the second game 10-5.

The Lady Lions took a short lived 1-0 lead in the first inning of the first game, after Galena left the bases loaded on Abbey Underhill’s centerfield diving catch after a base hit and 2 walks. For the Lady Lions Ryleigh Sills started with a base hit, and was scored on Sarah Spencer’s sacrifice deep centerfield fly.

Galena tied the game in the top of the second after Paige Jensen walked. After Jara Thrower was put out on a sacrifice bunt, Jensen broke for third. Baxter Springs overthrew the pick off and Jensen came in.

The Lady Bulldogs added a run in the fourth inning. Madison Cox walked and went to second on a wild pitch. Addison DeCocq singled, scoring Cox. Baxter Springs went ahead 3-2 in their bottom half of the inning. Kelsey Spence led off with a base hit, and moved to second on Chelsey Madden’s ground out. Kortney Sills rapped a single and the Lady Lions had runners at the corners. Hailey Horn reached on base with a shortstop error bringing in the runners.

Galena knotted the game at three in the fifth inning. Abbey Westmoreland started with a base hit and later came across with Decoq’s single. The Lady Lions retook the lead 4-3 in the inning. Spencer reached with her base hit, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Spence’s sacrifice fly.

Again the Lady Bulldogs tied the game in the sixth inning. Jensen went to first base when she was hit by a pitch, then stole second. Jensen later score on a centerfield error. The Lady Lions went up 7-4 in their turn in the inning on four doubles. Karley Bailey doubled, then Underhill got the RBI on her double. R. Sills doubled scoring Underhill, and came in on Spencer’s double.

In the seventh inning, left fielder R. Sills saved a hit on a diving catch. Next Cadie-Marie Stapleton went deep over the centerfield wall for the Lady Bulldogs fifth and final run.

Additional hitters for Galena were: Meaghan Flowers with two singles; with Makayla McNemar and Thrower adding base hits. Cheyenna Von Moss added a base bit for the Lady Lions.

The first three batters started the second game with runs. R. Sills started with a single. Von Moss laid down a bunt and the Galena catcher overthrew first bringing in R. Sills. Spencer doubled off wall for a RBI. K. Sills knocked in Spencer with her single.

Galena started their scoring in the second inning after Stapleton singled and came in after Jensen’s base hit and an overthrow. The score stayed 3-1 until the fifth inning when the Lady Bulldogs took a 5-3 lead.

Jensen singled again and later stole third. A right fielder error brought in Jensen. Galena reached on a error, Westmoreland singled, then Baxter Springs committed two more errors. Galena committed three errors in the inning allowing the Lady Lions a run.

With Galena leading 5-4 going in the last scheduled seventh inning the Lady Bulldogs broke loose with 6 base hits, and received a walk, a HBP, and a Lady Lion error. Baxter Springs added a run after Spencer knocked another double and scored on Madden’s blooper over second base.
