Cost is $20 for June 22-23 camp for grades 6 through 8

JOPLIN, Mo. – If you have a budding doctor or nurse, Mercy Hospital Joplin has the right prescription with a two-day, hands-on science and health camp in June.

The Southwest Missouri Area Health Education Center will present MASH Camp 2017 for students entering sixth, seventh or eighth grades from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, June 22, and Friday, June 23, at Mercy Hospital Joplin, 100 Mercy Way. Cost is $20.

The goal of the camp is to spark a career interest in health care and science prior to high school coursework, according to Katie Harden, manager of medical education programs at Mercy in Joplin. Camp instructors will include health professionals and educators. Students will participate in a variety of activities including suturing and dissection labs, diagnostic imaging demonstrations, scrubbing in for surgery demonstrations and hospital tours.

“We’re excited for this partnership,” Harden said. “Mercy hopes to expose more students to health care career opportunities, giving them a glimpse into a wide variety of jobs available to them. Students will see first-hand what health professionals do in their field each day through hands-on activities as staff shares their knowledge and experience with the students.”
