GALENA - Consistent and solid. Those are the words to describe the Galena Bulldogs football team, starting with 17-year veteran Coach Beau Sarwinski. Toss in the always base of a Wing-T offense with a few variations, and the ability to always go deep into the year end playoffs.

Galena was chosen to finish second in the very tough CNC League coaches poll behind Columbus, and ahead of Frontenac and St. Mary’s-Colgan of Pittsburg.

The key for the Bulldogs’ 2017 season is their defensive line. All starters return, led by First Team All-State 6’ 2” 240 pound senior Trevor Little. Other returning lineman are a pair of 5’ 10” 220 lb seniors in Conner Adams and Drake Adams. Another senior, starter Dylan Watkins returns at 5’ 9” 170 lb.

Team leader and First Team All-State P.J. Sarwinski is gone at quarterback, and has signed with Pittsburg State University. To fill the void J.C. Shelton, junior 5’ 9” 170 lb, will shift from running back to direct the offense.

"Shelton played some quarterback as a freshman," said Coach Sarwinski. "He has a great feel for it and will adjust just fine and add an extra dimension in out Wing-T."

Brothers senior Michael Helton, 5’ 8” 160 lb, and junior Joseph Helton, 5’ 10” 175 lb were Honorable Mention All-State at running backs. Another fine running back is 5’ 10” 160 pound junior Kooper Lawson. Senior Garrett Hall, 6’ 3” 190 lb, was also a Honorable Mention All-State at tight end. Senior Ethan Henson, 5’ 11” 185 lb, is slated as the go to receiver.

On the defensive line side are senior Austin Harshman, 5’ 10” 230 lb , Little, and both Adams. Joseph Helton and Lawson are penned in at linebackers. In the backfield should be Hall, Michael Helton, along with Shelton. Henson will be at the defensive end position.

Coach Sarwinski said of his team, "We have high expectations. We play hard and physical. Our kids really buy into being self-disciplined. They understand the team concept. We have kids with a lot of experience."
