OSWEGO - Junior Trey White got Baxter Springs off to a fine start on their 2017 football season. On offense and defense White scored the first three touchdowns in their 40-13 win against the Indians in Oswego.
For the first touchdown, the Lions started at the 49. White completed a pass to junior Jacob Burks at the 25. After two straight Lion offside penalties the Lions were moved back to the 35. Senior Tyler Price swept left down the sidelines to the two. With a quarterback sneak with just two seconds left in the first quarter, White went in. Newcomer senior Jose Leon, in his first try at American football, made good on his PAT kick.
One minute into the second quarter, as a defensive back, White intercepted a pass and ran a pick-six from the 10 yard line. Again, Leon’s kick was good on the PAT.
Three more Lion touchdowns came in the second period. White picked up a fumble at the Indians 15 and went to pay dirt. After a quarterback sack by senior Blythe Ipock, the Lions started at the Indian’s 37. Sophomore Austin Hendrix went left side at the 5:48 mark to score.
Baxter Springs went to 34-0 and 40-0 at the end of the first half and on their first possession of the second. Their fourth touchdown was set up with a pass from White to sophomore Kyler Reece at the 31. Price scooted left from there for his score. Baxter Springs then did a fake PAT kick, and Hendrix caught the two-point conversion.
Reece took the second half kick off from the 40 across mid field to Oswego’s 37. Senior Narciso Ortiz moved the Lions to the four, and they were down to the two on a Indian penalty. With 32 seconds gone in the third quarter Ortiz went the final two yards.
Baxter Springs back ups played the remainder of the game and Oswego was able to score twice to negate the shut out.
St. Mary’s-Colgan of Pittsburg, after their opening 16-0 loss to Galena, will now travel to the Lion Den this Friday night. A 7 p.m. kick-off is scheduled. A Star Wars half time show is planned by the mighty Lion Pride marching band.
