Fannie Jamia Burnett, 99, of Baxter Springs, Kan. passed from this life on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at Joplin Gardens, Joplin, Mo.

Fannie was born on December 3, 1917 in Newport, Ark. to the union of Napoleon and Susie (West) Camp. Fannie graduated from Galena High School, Galena, Kan. She was a teacher in Newport, Ark. and did housekeeping. She was later employed by the Census Bureau in Pittsburg, Kan. and then worked and retired from the Social Security Administration in Miami, Okla. After retiring she worked part time with her daughter Margaret at All Write Bookkeeping in Joplin, Mo.

Fannie accepted Christ at an early age at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Galena, Kan. She joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Baxter Springs, Kan., where she was a member for over 75 years, before they had to close their doors. She joined Unity Baptist Church in Joplin, Mo. a couple of years ago. Church was a priority in Fannie Burnett’s home.

She has truly been the backbone of our family using her wisdom and her strong faith in God to help lead us and guide us all. Fannie always had a great sense of humor.

Mom will surely be missed for her homemade pies, macaroni and cheese, and sweet potatoes.

Fannie is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry Burnett; daughter, Karen Sue Burnett-Thomas; son, Henry A. Burnett; three grandchildren, Wesley Love, Alfred Story, and Briant Thomas.

Fannie is survived by two daughters, Margaret E. Love and husband Jerry of Joplin, Mo., Susan E. Johnson and husband Bernard of Omaha, Neb.; one son, Ron E. Colbert of Glen Burnie, Md.; 11 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, September 14, 2017 at Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel. Pastor Bernard Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow in the Baxter Springs Cemetery.
