BAXTER SPRINGS - The Galena football team went into the Baxter Springs Lion Den Friday night, and rolled their across-the-Spring River rival 41-6. The Bulldogs (3-0) put 35 points on the scoreboard the first half, and held the Lions (1-2) from entering the end zone.

Baxter Springs had to punt on their first possession. The Bulldogs started at their 32 yard line, then marched down the field with three minutes gone for their first score. After a run by Michael Helton, a pass from J.C. Shelton to Joseph Helton, moved the Bulldogs to the Lions’ 28. Joseph ran for five more yards, then caught the 23 yard pay-dirt pass from Shelton.

The Lions punted on their second possession, and pinned Galena down at the 11. Joseph and Kooper Lawson could only manage runs up to the 17. Joseph then ripped over his left tackle to the Lion's 39. A short pass to Michael and a run completed a 39 yard touchdown. With less then seven minutes gone, Michael ran the 2-point conversion for a 14-0 lead.

At the end of the opening period, Galena advanced to the Baxter Springs 13. On a 3rd-and-1, the Lion's Jace Flood stopped the Bulldogs. On a 4th down, Baxter Springs again stopped the Bulldogs from scoring.

Galena started the second quarter on the Lions’ 19 after a Lion bad snap on an attempted punt. Shelton ran left, faked to Joseph, and handed the ball to Lawson who ran into the end zone. Garrett Hall caught the 2-point conversion pass for a 21-0 lead.

Midway through the second half, Hall on a punt return ran from the 22 to the 50, then caught a side line pass at the 40. With a 3rd-and-10, Lawson’s catch provided Galena with a new set of downs. Shelton and Lawson completed two more passes to the four. Michael took the sphere in from there, and Hall made good on his PAT kick to put the Bulldogs up 28-0.

The Lions put together an 81 yard march down their home field towards the end of the first half. Junior Trey White hit sophomore Kyler Reece on the run at Galena’s 48, and Reece moved to the 32. Another catch and run by Reece put the Lions at the 15. Senior Spencer Barnard on the right side line caught a White pass at the 15, and advanced to the five. White went up the middle to the three. This is where the Lion's work ended. Hall stepped in front of a White pass two yards deep, and went 102 yards to his own end zone. After catching his breath, Hall’s PAT kick finished the half at 35-0.

At the start of the third period, Galena went from their 35 down to the 11. Mostly with runs by Lawson. The Lions finally stopped the Bulldogs and put Galena in a fourth down situation. An incomplete pass turned the ball over to Baxter Springs. But wait, a roughing the passer penalty was called, and Galena received a new set of downs and moved to the six. Two plays later Joseph scored for their final 41 points.

The Lions did score later in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Austin Hendrix went on a run of 33 yards. A Bulldog pass interference penalty advanced Baxter Springs to the 14. Little by little the Lions moved to the one. White took it in from there.

Both quarterbacks had good games. Shelton completed 7-10 passes for 162 yards, and White went 10-19 for 178. Lawson gained 76 yards on eight carries. The Lion's Reece finished with five catches for 117 yards.
