RIVERTON - Baxter Springs traveled to Riverton last Friday to be part of the Rams’ homecoming festivities. The Lions earned their second-shut out of the season by downing a never-say-quit, undermanned Ram team 47-0.
The Lions finished with 335 yards of offense with Trey White passing for 120 yards. Narciso Ortiz, on 11 carries, had 98 yards rushing, out of the Lions’ total of 215. Tyler Price gained 40 yards on six attempts. Stephan Namelo had three receptions for 62 yards, and netted 20 yards on the ground.
On defense the Lions limited Riverton to 49 total yards of offense, and only seven first downs. Justin Schnieders had three solo tackles, a fumble recovery, and a tackle for a loss. Ortiz had an interception, and three solo tackles.
After Riverton was forced to punt on their first possession, Baxter Springs went from their 25 eating up the clock. With 50 seconds left in the opening period, Ortiz scored from the eight. Jose Leon made the PAT kick.
At the end of the first quarter the Lions’ Blythe Ipock had a tackle for a loss, followed by a quarterback sack, and his fumble recovery. At the Rams’ 24 a Riverton pass interference call moved the Lions to the 12. With a minute gone in the second quarter White caught Namelo in the end zone to lead 13-0.
Next Riverton crossed the 50 yard line for their first time. On the kick off Gage Kirby went from the18 to the 30. Later facing a 3rd and 15, Mikel McCann caught a 12 yard pass to move the Rams to the Lions’ 35. Ortiz on a tipped pass had his interception. The Lions took over on the 31. Tyrae Skye caught a White pass at the 39. White juked right to the 45, then Mamelo had a nice run to the 14. Rather small, Price disappeared in the middle of tacklers up the middle, then jumped out to score the Lions third TD. Leon made his extra point kick good.
The Lions next touchdown was in the third quarter. They started at the their 35 where Namelo ran to the Rams’ 43. With a catch by Spencer Barnard the ball was at the 35. Ortiz went to the 30. Price caught a pass the 21, and moved to the 17. A defensive holding call moved the Lions to the seven. Namelo on a nine yard run was stopped at the one, and Ortiz scor4ed from there. Again, Leon’s kick was good. Less than two minutes later Namelo on a nine yard run scored.
After the kick off, Jace Flood and Ipock each recorded a tackle for a loss, and linebacker A.J. Himes burst through for a quarterback sack.
With the varsity players still in the game, Baxter Springs added one more touchdown in the third quarter when Price went off left tackle for 13 yards to the end zone.
In the fourth quarter the junior varsity showed their abilities. With 1:03 left in the game freshman Kain McCully made a nice 28 yard run for his first varsity touchdown. For a successful 2-point conversion, freshman quarterback Brayden Barnard caught classmate Lane Hill in the end zone.
The Lions will have homecoming ceremonies this Friday night. The Arma Northeast Vikings will be their guest with a scheduled 7 kick-off.
