KANSAS CITY - This past summer, the local 12-Under USSSA softball Blitz finished seventh out of a field of 41 teams in a Class B Kansas State Tournament.

This year the girls have moved up to a 14-Under division, and traveled this last weekend to the Kansas City area. Their team name has been changed to the MVP Athletics, with the MVP Complex in Galena as a sponsor. With very little team practice one parent joked the MVP stood for “mostly volleyball players”, as most of the girls are on their school’s volleyball teams in the fall.

The MVP’s began Saturday morning in Blue Valley, at the recreation complex, and started with a 5-4 win over the Kansas Edge from Topeka. With Gracie Wixon’s grand slam, they beat Wellington Kansas 10-9. Their third game Saturday was a 3-1 loss to the Blue Springs Missouri Elite.

On Sunday they moved to the Heritage Park in Olathe and blanked the Olathe KCP Futures 13-0. This win moved the MVPs up to the Gold Division. Here they again faced the Topeka Edge.

With a 5-3 win they faced undefeated the Topeka Lightening Storm for the championship. For the first three innings the two teams went back and forth for the lead, and they were even at 5-5. Topeka blew the game open in the fourth inning with five runs to finish 10-5.
