Empire District to host free tree giveaway at Columbus City Park

COLUMBUS - Empire’s vegetation management team is doing a tree giveaway for Columbus customers on Friday, Nov. 17, in the Columbus City Park.

Registration for trees began on Oct. 7, but according to Jillian Campbell, Media Coordinator for Empire District Electric, it's not too late to sign up.

"At this time we still have plenty of room for registrations and we would like for Columbus customers to have the opportunity to pick up a free tree," said Campbell.

By planting the right tree in the right place, you can reduce energy consumption by up to 20 percent annually. The benefits don't stop there, however, as trees are scientifically proven to improve air and water quality, help relieve stress, and also help improve the visual aesthetic of a yard.

Trees help in reducing stormwater runoff and keep chemicals, oils, and pollutants out of water supplies. Studies have shown that children living in greener neighborhoods tend to be calmer and healthier. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and filter airborne pollution - reducing the conditions that cause asthma.
