Oglesby (Galena) and Gantt (Baxter) both qualify for state run

BURLINGTON - Seniors Matthew Oglesby from Galena and Garrett Gantt from Baxter Springs both competed in the 5K Kansas Class 4A cross country regional last Saturday held in Burlington. The top 10 in each class regional qualify for the respective state championships. In 4A boys division there was 101 runners. 19 runners finished under 18 minutes.

As close training partners and rivals, both Oglesby and Gantt will advance to the state run. Timothy Smith of Louisburg won the run in 16:42.12. Oglesby had beaten Smith in a previous meet, but cramped up at the finish and came in 2nd coming in just six seconds slower. Gantt came in with a 4th place finish running 17:12.83.

Girard as a team won the 4A regional with an average time of 17:50.49, Galena finished in 9th place with an average of 18:59.02. Girard placed two runners in the top 10 with Cormick Logue running in 6th in 17:24.59, and placing 8th was Ryan Hughes finishing in 17:29.51.

Paxten Eads of Ft Scott won the girls 4A regional running 20.18.02. Rachel Stephan of Girard ran 20.29.81 and came in 4th place. From Frontenac, Jessica Peterson finished 7th running 20:46.11.

In Class 2A, held at the Wamego Country Club, Jessica Frisbe of Oswego came in 4th with a time of 21:14.93. Two St-Mary’s-Colgan came in 7th and 8th place. Mary Grace Goetting ran 22:41.21, and Lily Myers finished in 22:43.21.

In the class 2A regional held the Richmond-Central Heights school, Jessee Jenkin from Cherokee-Southeast finished in 8th place with a time of 21:56.20. In the boys division, also from Southeast, Tanner Craddock came in 4th running 17:41.93. As a team the Cherokee Lady Lancers came in 9th with an average of 25:04.26.

The 4A and 2A state championship runs will be held at the Wamego Country Club. Class 3A will be held in Lawrence at the Rim Rock Farm.
