COLUMBUS - Work has begun at the site of a new monument to honor local veterans, on the northeast corner of the Cherokee County Courthouse lawn.

The Columbus Community Foundation has been working tirelessly for the past year to get plans in order to erect a memorial worthy of the honor local veterans deserve. The new memorial is taking the place of the existing "Military Wall of Honor" that has been located on the northeast corner of the square for several years.

The new Veteran's Memorial will recognize and honor all branches of the military. Community members and businesses had the chance to help fund the project by honoring local veterans through personalized granite pavers that will be placed around the monument.
