50 years ago this week Cherokee County residents were kicking off the holiday season with parades and community events much as we are today, but according to the Dec. 4, 1967, issue of The Baxter Springs Citizen, weather conditions were nowhere near as ideal we had for the community parades this year. In 1967, Baxter's Connie DeVilliers won the title of "Miss Jingle Bells" of the Columbus Christmas Parade. Connie competed against five other high school seniors from the area. Judges made their selection on the basis of personality, poise, and appearance. Aside from a starring role in the parade, Connie received a $25 gift certificate from Columbus merchants.
