BAXTER SPRINGS - The winners of last year's primary election officially began their duty for the 2018 year at last week's Baxter Springs City Council meeting. City Clerk Debbie Weston swore in Randall Trease as Mayor and four council members.

Mayor Trease was re-elected by a narrow margin in one of the closest local races. The council members sworn in were: Rick Chriestenson, Ward 1; Jimmy Younger, War 2; Sherri Howey, Ward 3; and Sherry Brown, Ward 4. All were incumbent candidates.

The new council unanimously voted to join the Cherokee County Economic Development on the Gold level. The topic was put forward by Councilwoman Howey, who noted that the council had voted against joining last year.

"I think we should do it," Councilman Gary Sisco said as he seconded the motion.

Baxter Springs joins Columbus and Galena as municipalities who are members. The cost for membership at this level is $1,000.
