CHEROKEE - After defeating Erie on Thursday evening, then Jayhawk-Linn on Friday, the Lions advanced to play Parsons Saturday night in the Cherokee-Southeast Lancer Classic. After a very tight battle with the Vikings, Parsons prevailed 62-59.
Parsons jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before seniors Max Sheffer and Preston Landis brought the Lions down 6-4. Joel Schibi for the Vikings and Blake Thiessen for the Lions each shot treys for a 9-7 score. With two baskets Parsons went to 13. Junior Trey White scored, as did Parsons’ Daquan Johnson. Sheffer lifted the Lions to 11. Parsons finished the opening period up 18-11 with a 3-pointer by Dariq Williams at the end of the quarter.
White connected on a three and a two, but Schibi shot a trey and Parsons was still leading 21-16. With 3:30 left in the quarter Thiessen tied the game at 27 with his own 3-pointer. Parson ran off five quick points to go up to 33. White and Sheffer ended the half with the Lions down 33-31.
In the third quarter the Vikings led 42-35. White hit a bucket, and Williams hit one for Parsons. White came back with a trey, and Landis brought Baxter Springs closer down 43-42. Davonte Yates scored for the Vikings. With two field goals by Landis, the Lions led for the first time and only time 46-45. Williams ended the quarter, and Parsons regained the lead 47-46.
In the fourth period Parsons went to a five point lead 51-46. White connected on two free throws, but the Vikings came back with four points. With Parsons up 58-53, White added a basket and two more free throws for a 58-57 score. To stop the clock Baxter Springs was forced to foul. Schibi made good on his two free throws. With .083 seconds left Landis connected on a basket and brought the Lions within reach 60-59. Again, Baxter Springs had to foul. Ezekiel Lyons put the final score in the books with his free throws.
For the night White had 29 points with three treys. Landis added 12 points, and Sheffer 10. For Parsons, Johnson led the Vikings with 16 points, Yates had 14, and Schibi 13.
Baxter Springs 67 - Erie 41
The Lions made quick work in their opening game against the Red Devils after leading 48-12 at the half. White had 29 points at the half with six 3-pointers. With his 6-for-6 free throws, he finished with 32 points. Junior Tucker Graves added 13 points on his six field goals. Sheffer and Landis each added eight points.
Baxter Springs 62 - Jayhawk-Linn 40
The Lions had a little tougher game on Friday after leading only 15-9 after the first quarter. They added 47 in the remaining quarters.
White again led Baxter Springs with 22 points. White finished the three game tournament with 83 points. Sheffer turned in a good night getting key rebounds, and his underneath scoring 20. Landis was solid with his senior leadership, and had his reliable 11 points.
With an 8-2 record the Lions will play at home against Bronaugh, Missouri, this Friday with an all boys night.
