William “Bill” Sheppard Hughes, 72, of Baxter Springs, Kan. passed from this life on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at his home with his family at his side.

Bill was born August 16, 1945 in Topeka, Kan. to the union of John Rees and Julie Ida (Sheppard) Hughes. Bill was united in marriage to Judith Ann (Christiansen) Hughes on July 9, 1965 in Columbus, Kan. Bill first worked as a surveyor for Eagle-Pitcher in Quapaw, Okla. Bill then worked as a shift supervisor for B.F. Goodrich in Miami, Okla. until they closed operations. He and his wife then started their own company called SEK Beverage Distribution and ran it for many years before selling the business. He then went to work for Superior Industries in Pittsburg, Kan. building aluminum wheels for automobiles and finished his career with Ozark Salad Company in Baxter Springs, before retiring in 2007.

Bill was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Baxter Springs. He enjoyed watching Nascar and working in his shop tinkering and working on cars. Early in life Bill painted houses as a side job while holding down his main job. Bill especially enjoyed the time he spent with his family, in particular with his grandchildren.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Lou (Hughes) Williamson.

Bill is survived by his wife Judith Hughes of the home; one son, John Rees Hughes and wife Kayci Bair Hughes of Jenks, Okla.; daughter, Robin Hughes Robinett and husband Scott Alan Robinett of Tulsa, Okla.; three grandchildren, Jacob Hughes Robinett, Brayden Bair Hughes, and Ellyce Marguerite Hughes; two nephews, Bill and wife Linda Hughes of Tulsa, Okla. and Eric Hughes of Tulsa, Okla.; His beloved cocker spaniel, Pepper.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel. Burial of ashes will follow in the Baxter Springs Cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed at www.derfeltfuneralhomes.com.
