RIVERTON - Staff at Riverton School District 404 recently got a unique opportunity to see what life is really like for some of their students. Elaine Johannes, an associate professor in Family Studies and Human Services at K-State, conducted a 'Poverty Simulation' at Riverton Friends Church.

Johannes believes that one of the best things an adult can do for the next generation is to demonstrate positive ways to deal with adversity. Unless you've experienced poverty, it's difficult to truly understand its impact. That was the motivation behind the project which began with a coalition of Manhattan organizations with leadership from Johannes, as well as Kate Behan, and faculty members in the School of Family Studies and Human Services in the College of Human Ecology.
