CHERRYVALE - The Lady Lions improved to 11-8, and 4-2 in the CNC League, with wins last week in Riverton (45-18), and Cherryvale (54-44).
The Cherryvale game was one that was a lot closer than the final score indicates. In many of their last few games, Baxter Springs has not played well in the first half. They had 12 turnovers in cherryvale, and didn’t block out on rebounds. Only two players scored in the opening period, and three in the second.
Abbey Underhill had two field goals, and was five for six on free throws, getting nine points in the first. Delaney Barnes added a 2-and-1. The Lady Lions led 12-10 after the opening quarter.
The Lady Chargers went up 15-12 at the start of the second. Underhill scored, and Cherryvale came back with a 3-pointer to lead 18-14. Kalynn Tarvin, off Baxter Springs’ bench, put the Lady Lions at 16. Baxter Springs went back on top 21-20 after Underhill’s basket, and Barnes three free throws. The Lady Chargers ended the half up 29-23.
As mentioned, Baxter Springs has been a second half team of late. In the third quarter the Lady Chargers were up 29-23. Underhill scored, Barnes scored, and Underhill again to close the gap at 29-27. A trey by Cherryvale put the Lady Chargers at 32. With 11 straight points, Baxter Springs now led 38-32. Kassity Shafer hit a 2-plus-1, Underhill scored, Barnes scored, Shafer scored, and Underhill added another basket. Brylee Rice put Baxter Springs ahead 40-35 after three.
In the fourth Cherryvale managed only a free throw as the Lady Lions scored eight. Barnes went four for four on free throws, plus a field goal, and Shafer added a basket. Two more free throws by Barnes, and one by Allie Fry, put the Lady Lions up 51-36. At the end of the quarter Rice had two more free throws. Madison Burton made a free throw to finish the Lady Lions scoring.
Underhill scored the highest single game points of her high school career at 22. She also added a block shot, plus two steals. Barnes was again tough upfront with three blocked shots, a steal, and 11 rebounds. She finished with 17 points with her nine of 10 free throws. Shafer had a block shot, seven rebounds, two steals, and seven points. Rice finished with two steals, and four rebounds.
Riverton scored seven of their final 18 points in the first quarter, leading 7-6 going into the second. Jamee Compton had four and Camryn Compton three. For Baxter Springs, Barnes hit two field goals, and Underhill one.
Riverton managed only a single free throw by C. Compton in the second period. Baxter Springs didn’t do much better as their only points were two field goals by Barnes. Barnes did hit five free throws, and Shafer two.
The Lady Rams' two points in the third quarter came from C. Compton. Barnes, Underhill, Fry, Rice, and Burton added baskets for Baxter in the third. The Lady Lions added five free throws with Underhill one, Rice three, and Burton two.
After Underhill scored twice more to finish with nine points, and Rice scored to finish with seven points for the game, the Lady Lions' bench players finished the game. Kennedy Krokroskia had two baskets, and Kaytlyn Glidewell added a steal and two points.
