GALENA – The Cherokee County Arts Association will present “Shrek: The Musical” Friday, March 2, through Sunday, March 4, at the Galena Performing Arts Center, 702 E. Seventh St.

Based on the hit 2001 animated fantasy, the production offers a layered mix of music, comedy and fun for the whole family, much like an onion …

Actually, it’s layered more like a parfait.

You ever met a person who says, “Heck no, I don’t like no parfait?” Parfaits may be the most delicious thing on the whole dang planet.

Anyway …

The story is follows an ogre who’s swamp is invaded by a host of fairy-tale creatures who have been banished from the kingdom of Duloc. In order to restore peace and quiet to his home, he accepts a quest from Lord Farquaad to fetch the evil ruler a bride by rescuing Princess Fiona. Along the way, he befriends a talking donkey, falls in love and learns a shocking secret.

The production is directed by JoAnna Derfelt Weeks, who says the cast is “embracing the fun” inherent in the story.

“We want the audience to wonder if they’re watching a cartoon or a musical at any given time,” she says.

Louis Morgan, who pulls double duty by serving as musical director and starring as Donkey, says the music is fun and energetic in ways different from other musicals.

“We have a lot of what are called ‘partner songs’ – which involve two or three people singing their own individual melodies at the same time,” he says. “When you hear the different personalities come together, it’s a lot of fun and very interesting musically.”

The cast for the production includes:
