COLUMBUS - Dennis Johnson Pastor of The Sherwin Christian Church will be honored on Sunday, May 20, for his 30 years of service to the church and our community.

Dennis began his ministry with the ordination service held Sunday, May 22, 1988, at the Sherwin Christian Church. During his 30 years of ministry he became active in the early development of the Columbus Association of Churches. During that time he worked with other Columbus church members to bring in such groups as Acapella, Christian comedian Mike Warnke, along with gospel concerts held in conjunction with Columbus Day activities. He served St. Johns Hospice based in Joplin, Missouri. Dennis was active in the return of Baccalaureate services at the High School beginning in 1996.

During his ministry he performed weddings and funerals for not only church members but many countless people involved in our community. When a family needed him, he would try to provide all he could for their needs. He spent many hours calling on friends that were in the hospital and nursing homes. In later parts of his ministry he became the chaplain for the City of Columbus, along with working with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s office.

A Celebration for his service will be held on May 20, at the Sherwin Christian Church. The Reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. The community is invited to attend; cards and well wishes for Dennis are greatly encouraged. The Sherwin Christian Church is located six miles west of Columbus on highway 160. Cards and well wishes can also be sent to Dennis through the Church. They can be addressed to Sherwin Christian Church, P.O. Box 123, Columbus, Kansas 66725.
