COLUMBUS - With two shut outs by junior Madyson Cox, the Lady Bulldogs of Galena (12-10) advanced to Salina this week for the honor of playing in the Class 4A Division II softball tournament. As a #8 seed they will face #1 Clay Center (22-0) Thursday, scheduled for a 5 p.m. fist pitch.
As the #2 seed in the regional tournament last Tuesday in Columbus, the Lady Bulldogs blanked the home team Lady Titans 6-0. They then stopped #1 seed Baxter Springs 12-0 in the championship game.
Against Columbus, Cox gave up singles singles, and two doubles by Riley Haraughty Courtney Zahm. She struck out two, and walked one. Against Cox, and Galena’s defense, the Lady Lions managed sending only 19 batters to the plate of a perfect 15 over the five innings. Baxter Springs had only one walk, one bunt single, and a blooper base hit over the pitcher’s head. Cox struck out four, and had the Lady Lions hit into five infield outs, and six fly outs.
Baxter Springs advanced to the championship game by playing Parsons, who is now winless for the season. The Lady Lions brought 20 batters to the plate in the opening inning. Baxter Springs scored all of their 16 runs in the inning for the shut out by Hanna Horn. Horn allowed a bunt single, and an infield hit.
In the 16-0 shut out in the first inning, Kennedy Krokroskia scored twice with two singles, and a walk. Ryleigh Sills walked twice, scored twice, and had a single. Allie Fry scored twice with a walk, and an E-7 error. Jenna Lawson scored twice with a walk, and a hit by pitch, as did Ashlyn Potter. Jaden Schnoover scored twice with an E-6 error, and a base hit. Delainy Anderson scored once after her triple. Olivia Roller scored once after she reached on a fielder’s choice. In the two innings at the plate, the Lady Lions received first base on seven base on balls, and three hit by a pitch.
Against Columbus, the Lady Bulldogs started with two runs. Makayla McNemar led off with a single, and scored on her sister Riley McNemar’s triple. Cox followed with a double down the leftfield line bringing in R. McNemar. Cox scored on Lindsey Dixon‘s base hit.
With thunder and dark clouds in the west, the Lady Bulldogs went to four runs in the third inning. Paige Jensen started with a base hit, and R. McNemar knocked another triple. Cox scored R. McNemar on her single. Meaghan Flowers scored the fifth run in the fifth after she received a walk, and came in on a single by Dixon.
In the 12-0 shut out of Baxter Springs the Lady Bulldogs received two singles from M. McNemar, and she scored two runs. Dixon scored three runs with one base hit. Cadie-Marie Stapleon rapped a double. Thrower had two singles, and three RBI’s. Cox had a base hit, and scored a run, and Flowers had a base hit. In the fifth inning freshman R. McNemar put the icing on the cake with a 3-RBI home run. She also scored three times.
