CHEROKEE - Riverton Head Coach Brian Mitchell is taking his team to the Kansas State Softball Tournament for his 14th time, and the 15th time for the Lady Rams. Besieged with injuries this year, the Lady Rams started their regional in the Class 3A tournament in Cherokee with a #4 seed and a 11-9 record. They started by shutting out Neodesha 11-0, then took down #1 seed Cherokee Southeast 13-3, who had a 17-1 record. They advanced to the state tournament by beating #2 seed Humboldt who had a 18-2 record.

Against Neodesha, Jaden Phillips threw the five inning shut out, giving up just three hits. Morgan McDonald started with a homerun. Jamee Compton went 3-3 with a double and two singles. Kenzie Lee had a triple, and a base hit. Asypen Girard had two singles. Base hits were recorded by Kenzie Houser and Makayla Lee.

The Lady Rams and Phillips had another mercy ruled 13-3 game against Southeast. In the five innings, Phillips again allowed only three hits. C. Compton had extra base hits with a triple and a homerun. J. Compton had a double, and a base hit. Girard and M. Lee each finished with two base hits. Phillips and McDonald had singles.

In the championship game against Humboldt, the Lady Rams started with five runs. McDonald started with a base hit, stole second, and an overthrow to centerfield scored McDonald. C. Compton walked and was forced out at second base, and J. Compton reached on a fielder’s choice, then stole second. K. Lee doubled in J. Compton. K. Lee came in on a pass ball.

Humboldt scored two runs in their bottom half of the first inning. They started with a walk, and advanced to third on a double. A 2-RBI single scored the two. The Lady Cubs tied the game at three in the second with a walk. After two outs, base hit tied the game. They stranded two in the third with two singles.

In the fifth inning the Lady Rams broke the game open with four runs. McDonald walked, and again stole second. She scored on Madison Strup’s single. C. Compton had a base hit, and Strup went to third. J. Compton hit a centerfield sacrifice to score Strup. With K. Lee batting, C. Compton scored on a E-5 error. They now led 7-3. Humboldt in the inning stranded two after a single, and a double. The Lady Cubs also left one on base in the sixth after a triple.

With two outs, Riverton added their final eighth run in the seventh inning. K. Lee singled, and later scored on a centerfield error. Humboldt added a run in the inning with three singles.

Riverton now moves on to Manhattan with a 14-9 record, and a #7 seed. They will face #2 Haven with a 22-1 record with a first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. this Thursday.
