Harry Joe Kingrey of Baxter Springs, Kan., entered into the kingdom of Heaven on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at the age of 83. Joe is survived and will be lovingly missed by his wife of 61 years, Shirley (Fain) Kingrey, and his daughters: Jodi Sweaney (and husband Craig), and Lori Kellum (and husband Bert), all of Baxter Springs. He is also survived by one sister, Gloria Hervey, of Independence, Mo. The lights of his life were his grandchildren: Joshua Sweaney, Abbey Ames, Joseph Kellum, Nicholas Kellum, and Kelsey Kellum Ng, and his six great-grandchildren.

Joe was born in Cherokee, Kan. on May 18, 1935 to Harry V. and Mary Catherine (Caresio) Kingrey. He graduated from Joplin High School in 1953 and attended Missouri University. Joe owned and operated the Ben Franklin store in Baxter Springs from 1961 – 1972. He then began a career in insurance and real estate. He owned Kingrey-Kellum agency until 1997.

Joe was an active member of the First Christian Church as a deacon, served on City Council, Baxter Springs Chamber of Commerce, and Lions Club.

Joe was an amazing husband, father, and friend, always caring about and praying for those he loved. A favorite quote of Joe’s is, “We have been so blessed by a wonderful family who all love each other.” He will be remembered for his witty sense of humor and his incredible love for family and friends.

Visitation will be Thursday, August 16, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel. Funeral will be Friday, August 17, at 2 p.m. at First Christian Church.
