BAXTER SPRINGS - The 2018 BHS volleyball season is underway with only two matches completed, but the Lady Lions have started undefeated. At home last Tuesday they defeated Liberal, Missouri, 25-21, and 25-11. With duplicate sets of 25-19 they downed Oswego.

On Thursday the Lady Lions traveled to Erie, and came home with three more match wins. Against Erie the first set stayed close till the overtime end. Baxter Springs pulled out a 27-25 win. They coasted to a 25-8 victory in the second set. Against Riverton they won the first set 25-17. The Lady Rams made it much harder in the second set. The Lady Lions won in another overtime 27-25. Their third match of the Quad meet was with Cherokee-Southeast, with the Lady Lions winning 25-19, 25-16.

"There are many positives from our games, and it isn’t just hitting, or passing, or serving," Coach Alayna Von Moss said. "We have won our games so far because I think we are well all around. Our passing has improved greatly from last year. Bridgett Dewey, Delainy Anderson, and Averi Wilson have worked really hard to create more plays. Our hitters Delaney Barnes, Kassity Shafer, Hannah Draper, Kennedy Krokroskia, and Autumn Holstrom have done a good job of being smart, while playing aggressive. Brooklyn Geisel, coming in as a freshman, has really done well, especially at making the right choice. Every game so far they have worked until the end. That’s something I love so early in the year."

A busy week is ahead for the Lady Lions. This Thursday they travel to Fort Scott for a dual match, and Saturday they will be in a tournament in Frontenac. Next Monday they host a junior varsity quad with Erie, Frontenac, and Girard. The varsity and JV travel to Cherryvale on Tuesday, along with Humboldt.
