GALENA — In 1978, after spending two years job hunting, Steve Jenkins started making candy for extra work. While he was managing Dairy Queen he decided to buy Laura Main’s candy recipes, the same recipes used for years by the very popular Sunny Jim’s Candies.

For the last six years, Steve has been selling his candy, made in his home, on street corners in Galena, Baxter Springs, Columbus, Seneca and Joplin, as well as various summer events in the area.

Now, Steve’s Candies has a home of its’ own on Seventh Street in Galena along the Route 66 Corridor. His new business location has a drive through window and several other extras he couldn’t sell from his home. Currently he features his candy plus frozen custard, and fountain drinks and soon will include shaved ice for the hot summer months.

At the new Steve’s Candies you will also find sugar free candy and frozen custard along with another of his specialties from the mining era, mine run candy.

Asked about his future plans, Jenkins said, “I plan on running this until my retirement.”
