Residents of Cherokee County will soon have an opportunity to buy a weather radio for $5.

Cherokee County Emergency Management Director Jason Allison received a grant which allowed Emergency Management to purchase 500 weather alert radios for county residents. Allison has since amended the grant so an additional 500 radios could be purchased. Allison said he did not feel 500 radios would be enough for Cherokee County residents. Allison said the radios are in conjunction with a grant that allowed the county to buy new tornado sirens.

Allison said the radios will be useful because they are for notifying the public when they are at home.

Radio Shack has paired up with Allison and members of the Community Emergency Response Team to have the radios programmed and ready to be sold by June 24. The radios will not be available to the public until then.

Allison said they are programming each of the radios with codes for Cherokee County. He said if residents want to hear weather updates from other counties they can program those counties in later.

Radios will be available at Mobile Advantage June 24.
