A fire that started Sunday morning between Columbus and Hallowell is under investigation by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department.

At 3:39 a.m. the Columbus Fire Department and deputies from the sheriff’s department responded to a call near Southwest 82nd and Hallowell Road. When they arrived they found a railroad trestle engulfed in flames.

An area of dead vegetation along the railroad right-of-way had also been burned.

Preliminary damage and repair estimates for the trestle are currently in excess of $150,000.

The sheriff’s office is currently conducting an investigation to determine if the fire was arson.
