With all area schools now back in session, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to be aware and cautious around bus stops and in school zones.

“In an effort to ensure all area children have a safe school year, our office will be working with area police departments, and school districts to increase patrols in school zones, especially during peak student arrival and departure times,” stated Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.

“Deputies will also be randomly following school buses throughout the county, to ensure that motorists properly stop when a school bus has activated its stop sign and red flashing lights.  In addition, residents are reminded of decreased speed limits in school zones, and the recently implemented lower speed limit near the Baxter Springs High School,” said.
