Employees of Utility Maintenance Contractors of Wichita began an estimated three and a half week project in the northeastern part of Columbus to line the existing clay sewer lines with a permanent plastic-fiberglass liner.

According to UMC project superintendent Don Keane the new liner will be "cures in place" inside the 8-inch, 10-inch, and 12-inch clay sewer lines.

The project comprises an area from Maple Street north to Buckeye Street and from Highway 69 and East Avenue east to 7th Street.

The project is part of an overall $1.1 million project with Tri-star Utilities Inc. of Independence as the general contractor.

The project is being paid for with a $400,000 Community Development Block Grant a $700,000 loan from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
