BAXTER SPRINGS — The Unified School District 508 Board of Education is looking to repurpose the current middle school building when the new middle school wing is complete at the site of the current high school.
Superintendent of Schools Dennis Burke told the Baxter Springs City Council Tuesday night there are two companies interested in purchasing the building to turn it into senior housing.
Burke also asked for a letter of support from the council for a second entrance to the high school campus. Burke said the Kansas Department of Transportation said they were willing to authorize the entrance but needed the letters.
Mayor Jenifer Bingham and the council both indicated they would send letters.
The council also agreed to contribute $10,000 to the proposed veteran's memorial project which is nearing construction goals.
In other business, the council:
• Set public hearings for several properties in need of demolition.
• Tabled discussion on a city vehicle-use policy until the Oct. 23 meeting.
• Set a policy on delinquent water bills, including eliminating phone calls to people who are behind on their water bills prior to shut off.
