The Unified School District 493 Board of Education again tabled a decision on moving Columbus Athletics from the Southeast Kansas League to the Crawford, Neosho, Cherokee League.

Because the new board members had not been privy to the previous discussions on the subject, the board put the issue off one more month in order to get a packet of information about the potential league change to the new members. There was some discussion about moving junior high athletics to the CNC, where they had been in years past, and leaving the high school in the SEK.

The board also discussed putting the Scammon School building on the market. The board had been approached by the city of Scammon asking the board to donate the building for use as a storm shelter.

Board Member Kathy Schoech said the district should at least attempt to sell the building first.

Member John Crain initially put forth a motion to list the building but after discussing various options, including Ebay, it was decided to table the motion and direct Superintendent David Carriger to look into various options before listing the building.

Additionally, Carriger reported to the board on a parent request for two girls who wished to participate in a cross country program. The Columbus School District currently does not have a cross country team and so the girls would need to participate for another school. Baxter Springs does have a program, but Carriger said it appeared the Baxter Springs district would not allow them to participate.
