COLUMBUS — Columbus firefighters were called to the scene of a structure fire about noon on Tuesday.
According to Columbus Fire Chief Jason Allison CFD got the call about 12:07 Tuesday afternoon and sent three trucks and eight firefighters to a house at 306 South Florida.
Allison said Baxter Springs sent one truck and three firefighters as well.
He said firefighters arrived to find the bottom apartment fully involved and the blaze had spread to the upstairs apartment.
No one was home at the time of the fire and the lower floor was unoccupied.
Allison said firefighters were on scene for about two hours and the cause of the blaze is under investigation by the Columbus Police Department and the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office.
UPDATE: Kansas State Fire Marshall Spokeswoman Rose Rozmiarek said Thursday the fire has been ruled arson and leads are being followed up.
