COLUMBUS — Crossland Construction, located in Columbus, KS, is pleased to announce that James (Douglas) Spear has recently completed all requirements for certification as a Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST). This highly respected certification is awarded to individuals who meet the experience and/or education requirements to include passing a four hour examination.

As a Construction Health and Safety Technician, Spear will provide an important supporting effort at the job site level to aid in the protection of workers, the public, property, and the environment. He will function with specifically designed and managed programs aimed at compliance with the safety principles and federal, state and local regulations.

Using on the job experience, along with practice exams and study guides, Spear prepared for nearly eight months for the certification test, which took place in Springfield, MO. The examination covers safety and health inspections, general safety training, safety and health record keeping, hazard communication compliance, safety analysis and planning, accident investigations, program management and administration, OSHA and other inspections.

When Spear was asked what advice he would give to someone considering becoming a CHST such as himself, he stated: “Don’t let it overwhelm you. It’s a very difficult test, but just study and apply logically what you see in the field every day.”

Spear currently serves as the Safety Coordinator at Crossland Construction where he has worked for the past eight years.

“This was not only a company goal, but something I’ve wanted to do to further my skill sets when it comes to day to day work,” stated Spear.

Spear is a native of Columbus, KS where he resides with his wife Vicki and two daughters, Karlee and Destiny. He has two sons, Chris (Darci) Spear of Pittsburg and Cory (Kayla) of Columbus; two grandsons, Jack and Kash and one granddaughter, Norah.

The Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certification program is operated by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP). Established in 1969, BCSP has nationally recognized credentials in the safety, health and environment accredited professional and para-professional certifications. The Board of Certified Safety Professionals is located in Champaign, Illinois.
