As part of an Arbor Day celebration the Empire District Electric Company will be giving away 150 trees at the Columbus City Park from 3 to 5 p.m. April 29.
According to Empire Spokeswoman Amy Bass, Empire has been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree Line USA utility and the give away is a requirement of the designation.
“Part of our commitment to the program is to provide trees in communities we serve,” Bass said. “This gives us an opportunity to talk to customers about the importance of planting trees in the right place.”
Bass said five varieties of trees will be given away: Easter Red Buds, Fringe Trees, Smoke Trees, American Yellow Wood and Carolina Silverbell trees.
“All of these trees are not tall trees,” she said. “They’re lower growing trees mostly ornamental.”
Bass said Empire would be distributing literature with the trees explaining to customers where to plant the trees in relation to power lines to avoid problems.
