When the going gets tough the tough get going…even in near zero wind-chills. Which might apply to the latest project for The Family Life Center’s Riverton location. For the last three years, the center has been working toward a goal of adding a total health facility to its existing structure. A large cheer was heard when the first shovel broke ground on the bitterly cold afternoon to begin construction..
The project began when a survey of 500 county residents confirmed the need for such an addition. The need was established and the prospect of raising the nearly $2 million needed for the project began.
By contacting businesses, and individuals, as well as applying for foundation grants the Center has raised $1.3 million with another $400,00 yet to be raised. Cherokee County sponsored a $400,000 block grant. Future funding sources being pursued are a J.E and L.E. Maybe Foundation Grant, as well as accepting an invitation to apply to the Kresge Foundation for funding.
At this point B.E. Smith Contracting was hired and a construction loan from American Bank was obtained.
On Sunday the process of building the new facility was begun with a groundbreaking ceremony on the site of the new 19,000 square foot addition. Upon its completion, scheduled for early fall, Cherokee County residents will have at their disposal a community health and fitness center including a gym, indoor walking track and multiple purpose room.
