Robert Eugene Stice, age 84, of Novi, Mich., after a brief illness, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on January 15, 2010, at Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills, Mich.

Robert was born September 27, 1925, in rural Oswego, Kan.  He was the first child of Roy and Anna (Cunningham) Stice. 

He attended schools in Oswego, was a member of the undefeated 1939 Oswego H.S. football team, and graduated from Oswego High School in 1943.  He was a proud Naval Veteran of WWII, serving on the USS John Hood destroyer in the Pacific Theater. 

He and Mary Jane LeRoy of Oswego were married on February 16, 1946 in the Oswego United Methodist Church.  They moved to Detroit the same year and they spent the remainder of their lives in that area.  She preceded him in death in 1984. 

Mr. Stice was a journeyman tuck pointer in the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union.  He worked in the Building Restoration Industry on many architecturally significant older buildings in Detroit and other cities in Michigan, along with adjacent states in the mid-west. 

He was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the VFW and he held leadership positions in the American Legion Post, all in Northville, Mich.  In his retirement, Mr. Stice continued to be an avid reader of all types of fiction along with WWII historical novels. 

He was also active in bowling and enjoyed watching action movies and westerns.  Mr. Stice was a Detroit Pistons Basketball fan, following the team closely on television.

He was a dedicated family man and enjoyed spending time with his daughters’ families, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Stice.

He is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Abbott and husband G. Michael of Canton, Mich., and Denise Gress and husband Douglas of Novi, Mich.; five grandchildren,  Angela (Ken) Jenkins, G. Robert (Stacey) Abbott, David (Theresa) Gress, Daniel (Amber) Gress, Dustin (Amy) Gress; seven great-grandchildren,  Garrett and Annabelle Jenkins, G. William Abbott, Mia and Olivia Gress, and Clare and Charlotte Gress; two sisters,  M. RoAnn (Dick) Sevart of Chanute and Rebecca (Ted) Edmondson of Columbus; sister-in-law, Patricia Stice of Oswego; Aunt Maurine Turner of Parsons and Uncle Elmer Cunningham of Oswego.  

The family will receive friends on Friday, January 22, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Thayer-Rock Funeral Home, downtown Farmington, Mich. 

Funeral services are Saturday, January 23, 11 a.m. at The First United Methodist Church in Farmington, Mich.  The Rev. Dr. Jeffrey R. Maxwell, senior pastor, will officiate. 

Committal prayers and Naval Military Honors will follow at Glen Eden Memorial Park, Livonia, Mich., where he will be laid to rest next to his wife, Mary Jane (LeRoy) Stice.
