CHEROKEE — Mickey D. Mowrey 70, of Cherokee, KS died 11:30 a.m. Tuesday September 13, 2011 at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, Kan. following a long illness.
Mickey was born October 4, 1940 in Paris, Texas, the son of Mike and Ruth (Pearse) Mowrey. He moved to this community in 1983 from Afton, Texas. He was a veteran of the Navy serving during the Vietnam Era. On November 1, 1980 he married Erma Jean Scales in Dickens, Texas, she survives at the home. Mickey worked as a Construction Contractor for Mowery Construction for over 50 years retiring in 1998 due to ill health. Mickey was of the Christian Faith loved coin collecting, card collecting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Kim Tedder; stepsons David Crowe and Charles Crowe and a step-father Tommie Chambless.
Survivors include his wife; children, Sarah Meador and Tommy Mowrey; step-children, Debbie, Donita, Jimmy, Richard, Donald, Leanna, Peggy and Sherri; sister, Becki McChesney and husband Bob of Iowa; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Graveside Services will be 2 p.m. Friday September 16, 2011 at the Monmouth Cemetery in Rural Crawford County with Rev. Dennis Johnson officiating. Informal visitation will be from 12 to 8 p.m. Thursday September 15, 2011 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Columbus, KS. In lieu of flowers the family ask expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials to the United Methodist Church in Cherokee, KS.
