Darrell Eugene Preston, age 57, passed away at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at his home following an illness.

He was born September 12, 1955 in Columbus, Kan. His parents were Wyman and Janice (Barton) Preston. He had lived in the area all of his life.

He graduated from Southeast High School, Cherokee, Kan. before attending Ks Vocational School. He owned and operated Preston Construction, and Cherokee Limestone Quarry, rural Columbus, Kan. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. Among his greatest pastimes were fishing, hunting, and pushing dirt.

Darrell was married to Beverly Going on July 30, 1976 in Columbus, Kan. She passed away July 6, 2009.

Surviving is one daughter, Kimberly (and Nathaniel) Tingley, McCune, KS; two step-sons, Tony Coble, Columbus, Kan. and Jimmy Coble, Baxter Springs, Kan.; three grandchildren, William Haines, Dakota Wammack, and Jerason Wammack; his father, Wyman Preston, Columbus, Kan.; two brothers, Doug (and Debbie) Preston, Hallowell, Kan. and Dan (and Liz) Preston, Columbus, Kan.; two sister, Connie (and Stan) Dillinger, McCune, Kan., and Cheryl (and Jake) Gurnee, Hallowell, Kan.

Graveside services will be at 10 am, Saturday, October 27, 2012 at McKee Cemetery, rural Columbus, Kan. under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus, KS. Pastor Jeff Swart will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Zwahlen, Jody Zwahlen, Eric Preston, Mike Saporito, Robbie Simoncic, and Derek Van Helton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
