George Plunkett, 88, of Columbus, Kan. passed away January 12, 2012 at Freeman Health Systems in Joplin, Mo.

George was born on May 7, 1923 in Wymore, Neb. He was the son of George and Virginia (Pantier) Plunkett. George was a graduate of Wyandotte High in Kansas City, Kan. He married Regina “Jean” Hoke on May 17, 1947 in the Rectory of St. Peters Cathedral in Kansas City, Kan. George and Jean moved to Columbus in 1948. George was a member of the Army Air Corp serving in WWII in the South Pacific Theater. George worked for Richard Implement Company for seven years and Deakins Benham Pontiac Motors for 30 years retiring in 1986. He was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, American Legion, Veteran Foreign Wars, very supportive member of the NRA, Charter member of the Columbus Jaycees serving one term as president, Joplin Rifle and Pistol Club, and the Puddle Jumpers Camping Club. One of his favorite things to do was traveling in his motor home and camping with his grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Georgene Sprague.

Survivors include his wife Jean of the home; two sons, Greg Plunkett and wife Mary of Fort Smith, Ark. and Doug Plunkett and wife Carol of Wichita, Kan.; four grandchildren, Jess Plunkett, Allison Blake, Jason Plunkett and Kristan Plunkett; six great grandchildren; and one sister JoAnn Vogrin of Overland Park, Kan.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 14, 2012, 1 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Columbus, Kan. with Father Larry Parker officiating burial will follow in Park Cemetery, Columbus, Kan. Rosary will be held Friday, 7 p.m. at the Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus, Kan. visitation will follow. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or Donors choice.
