William J. Johnston, 80-year-old Vinita resident passed away Thursday, September 27, 2012 at Craig General Hospital.

William was born May 16, 1932 in South Mound, Kan., to John O. and Mary O. (Pontious) Johnston. He married Shilrley J. Baker on January 19, 1952 in Parsons, Kan., and they moved to Vinita in 1994 from Ft. Wayne, Ind.

William was an electrician by trade. He worked at the ammunition plant in Parsons, Kan., and also at Boeing in Wichita, Kan. He also worked many years for Goodrich in Miami and at Ft. Wayne, Ind., as well as, Rocketdyne in California.

William was an avid handyman around the house and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially all of his grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one daughter, Glenda Thompson, four sisters, Pat Nelson, Dorothy Treiber, Mary Robison , and Catherine Johnston; and one brother, John Johnston.

Survivors include, wife Shirley of the home; one daughter, Anita Porter and husband Ty of Vinita; four sisters, Olive Haight of Chanute, Kan., Marjaret Burzinski of Parsons, Kan., Mignon Yates of Baltimore, Maryland, and Rita Horton of Parsons, Kan.; one brother, Paul D. Johnston of Cherryville, Kan.; three grandchildren, Brian Thompson, Trent Porter and Rachel Porter; two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

No services are planned at this time.
