Paul William Churchill, 83, of Columbus, Kan. died at 2:34 p.m., on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at Quaker Hill Manor in Lowell, Kansas.
Paul was born March 25, 1928 in Treece, Kan. to Paul and Wilhelmina (Smithson) Churchill. He attended grade school in Treece and graduated from Cherokee County Rural High School in 1945.
He was a little league baseball coach in Columbus for a number of years. Paul served in the U. S. Navy aboard the USS Seminole, 7th Fleet in the Pacific from 1952 to 1954. He was a process operator for Spencer Chemical Company and worked for the Gulf Oil Corporation as a process advisor in South Korea and Kuwait. Paul began working for Empire District Electric Company at the Riverton Plant in 1973 and retired from the Joplin facility in 1990 as the Supervisor of Building Services. Paul enjoyed fishing, golf, hunting, and gardening. His greatest daily joy was spending time with his buddies at the coffee shop.
In 1947, he married Norma Belt. They had one daughter, Sheryl. Paul and Norma were divorced in 1952. On June 19, 1954 he married Naomi Harris in Oswego, Kan. They had two children, Doug and Julie. Naomi preceded Paul in death in 1989 after 35 years of marriage.
Also preceding Paul in death were his parents, and one sister, Shirley Passmore.
Survivors include one son, Doug Churchill of Columbus; two daughters, Sheryl Snyder of Topeka and Julie Stover and her husband Brad of Columbus; one brother, John Churchill and his wife Rita of Sun City, Arizona; six grandchildren, Lacy Stover of Columbus, Devon Stover of Salina, Samantha Snyder of Topeka, Brock Snyder of Topeka, Shawn Churchill of Columbus, and Julia Churchill of Columbus.
A memorial service for Paul will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 18, 2011 at First Christian Church with Pastor Jeff Wary officiating. Friends may call at Murdock Funeral Home in Columbus from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to pay their respects and sign the register book.
A memorial scholarship will be set up at Columbus High School in memory of Mr. Churchill. Murdock Funeral Home will act as custodian.
