DERBY — The Newton High School girls’ golf team finished fifth Wednesday at the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I golf championships at the Derby Golf and Country Club.

Maize won the meet at 377, followed by Hutchinson at 395, Salina Central at 403, Derby at 405, Newton at 455 and Salina South at 474.

Ellie Cobb of Salina Central and Emma Johnson of Derby tied for top medalist honors with an 86.

Newton was led by junior Kit Kingsley, who tied for 11th at 102. Katie Smet was 17th at 106, followed by Brynna Walton at 119, Naomi Kuhn at 128, Hailey Southern at 130 and Maggie Rostetter at 130.

“It was a rough day for our team,” Newton coach Joanie Pauls. “We had a couple of players playing through illness. The course played long and difficult in the windy conditions. Kit finished one place off medaling. She drove the ball well, but lost too many strokes chipping and putting. Katie shot well enough on her first nine to be in medal contention (started on 9 shooting 49), but wasn't able to finish as strong. On a day when most of our players were above their season average, Brynna posted her best score of the season.”

Newton competes today at the Buhler Invitational at the Hesston Golf Course. Newton hosts the Class 5A regional tournament Monday at the Hesston Golf Course.
