“The team did a great job of bouncing back after our last meet,” Newton coach Joanie Pauls said. “Kit Kingsley posted a career best, breaking 90 for the first time with an 85. She earned her highest finish (3rd) of the year. Katie had a really bad first hole, but she was able to battle back and improve nine strokes on the back nine. Maggie and Haley both improved 20 strokes from our last meet. Brynna and Mollee both posted season bests. The team did a much better job with chipping today. Our course management helped us avoid big numbers. We shot our best team score of the year. We are hosting 5A Regionals at Hesston on Monday. This will give us a lot of confidence going into Regionals.”

HESSTON — The Hesston High School volleyball team swept a non-league triangular Thursday at home.
Hesston downed Junction City St. Xavier 25-7, 25-2; and Southeast of Saline 25-17, 25-15. Southeast topped St. Xavier 25-5, 25-8.
“We came out with more energy and focus tonight and played well,” Hesston coach Jason Peters said. “We have had some great battles with Southeast of Saline the past several years and the team was determined to come out and take control of the match, which they did in both sets from the beginning. Southeast has several strong hitters and good blockers, but we were able to get them out of system with our serving and continued to attack their defense throughout the night, hitting .328 for the match. This was a good match for us to give us some momentum for a strong tournament this weekend. We look forward to the challenge of playing some talented teams that we have never seen before.”
Hesston is 20-3 and plays Saturday at the Council Grove Invitational. The Swathers face Santa Fe Trail, Clay Center and Council Grove in pool play. The Swathers then end CKL play Tuesday at Lyons with Smoky Valley.
