The Newton High School football team had its chances, but fell to Andover 45-21 Friday at Fischer Field on homecoming.
The Railers had five turnovers with Andover scoring 10 points off the turnovers. The Trojans turned the ball over twice, with Newton scoring a touchdown.
“We weren’t consistent offensively or defensively,” Newton coach Chris Jaax said. “Those things really hurt us today. We turned the ball over at the beginning of the second half and then had a big penalty on third down. Things like that. Those are things we can correct. I’m proud of the kids for the way we fought. It’s tough to be in that situation.”
Newton was led by Kade Remsberg, who posted 209 yards rushing on 24 carries with two touchdowns. Remsberg was named homecoming king at halftime and made his verbal commitment to the Air Force Academy earlier this week.
“When I went on my visit this summer, it was a great place, a great environment,” Remsberg said. “I can really see myself there. When I made my second trip, I knew that was the place I wanted to be. It’s great academics, great football. It has everything I want in a school.”
Remsberg said he hasn’t decided on a major or a career path.
In the game, Remsberg opened with a big run.
“It was just a struggle,” Remsberg said. “We got the ball moving early on. We have to eliminate the mistakes early on and be on point with everything we do. We’re going to work on that this week and go get Ark City.”
Landon Moore hit seven of 19 passes for 110 yards with two interceptions. He was held to one of nine passing in the second half. Nathan Ahrens had 68 yards receiving on two catches.
For Andover, Chase Oberg hit 21 of 29 passes for 214 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Oberg added nine carries for 114 yards and a score. Robert Bundy had 28 carries for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Evan Bell had nine catches for 129 yards and two touchdowns.
An Andover turnover on the first possession of the game set up a 65-yard Remsberg run on the following play. Andover came right back with a 58-yard Oberg run to set up a five-yard Robert Bundy run.
Andover took the lead on a 29-yard pass from Oberg to Evan Bell late in the first half. Newton tied the game back up on a 10-yard Remsberg run. Again Andover replied with a 40-yard Oberg run midway in the second quarter.
Newton got inside the Andover 10 late in the half, but an interception killed the drive. Newton finished the half with three turnovers to one for the Trojans.
A Railer turnover on the first possession of the second half set up a 24-yard Nathan Hammar field goal. On Andover’s next possession, the Trojans went 54 yards in seven plays, scoring on a 14-yard pass from Oberg to Evan Bell.
Newton got back in the game on a 24-yard Moore run on the first play of the fourth quarter to cap an eight-play, 77-yard drive. Andover recovered the on-side kick at its own 46. Five plays later, Oberg hit Ben Smith for a seven-yard touchdown pass.
Newton gave up the ball on downs on its own 33 with 7:54 to play. Newton recovered a fumble on the next play. Andover got the ball back on downs at its own 39, needing just four plays to score on a five-yard Bundy run with 3:09 to play. Newton fumbled the ball back two plays later.
Newton plays at 7 p.m. Friday at Arkansas City. The Bulldogs are 2-4, 0-2 in the AV-CTL II, after a 52-13 loss to Goddard.
“Ark City is a tough team,” Jaax said. “They have a great quarterback, a big dude. They have a great offensive line. They can move the ball. They’re a good team. We have a good week of preparation ahead of us.”
