The St. John cross country team traveled to Sterling on Thursday to compete in the Sterling Invitational. Seventeen schools attended the meet at the Sterling Country Club. The afternoon started out warm and windy but a cold front came through making the meet cold and extremely windy. Despite the wind, the Tiger runners ran some of their fastest times of the year.

Ninety runners competed in the varsity boys’ race. Triston Long led the St. John runners running a personal best time of 17:59 and finishing in 11th place.

In 15th place was Quincy Smith with a PR of 18:11. In 16th place was Remington Walker with a PR of 18:12. Other varsity runners were A.J. Miller 24th, 18:32; Mason Osborne 30th, 18:55; Wrangler Walker 31st, 18:56 and Braden Witt 40th, PR of 19:14.

“It was great to see our boys run so well even on such a windy day. We are going into our last three weeks of the season, so we will start to back off mileage a little bit in practice, and I know our guys will be excited to be racing on some fresher legs” said Coach Delp.

The varsity girls’ race included 58 runners and some very fast times. Page Doran placed 32nd with a new PR of 23:05. She was followed by Shayla Garcia 36th, 23:19 and Jackie Rios 37th, with a new PR of 23:26.

“Our girls ran well in the elements. With League and Regionals on the horizon, we need to continue to whittle down our times” said Coach Delp.

In the Freshman/JV boys’ race of 95 runners, Trey Fisher finished in 1st place with a time of 19:14. He was followed by Alexis Valenzuela who won the JV race with a PR of 19:15. Hunter Hanson was 2nd in the JV race with a PR of 19:21. Luke Mercer finished in 6th place with a time of 19:56 and Clayton Brummer finished in 10th place with a PR of 20:33.

In the JV girls race, Jaden Reed finished in 14th place with a time off 29:28. She was followed by Ramsey McVey 18th, 30:16 PR and Julia Taylor 23rd, 34:42.

Bringing home medals in the junior high races were 7th grade boys Elijah Delp 2nd, 5:50 and Nick Huston 6th, 6:07 and in the 7th grade girls’ race MaKayla Meyer, 4th with a time of 6:46.

“This was the last meet of the season for the junior high runners and they ran some of their best times of the year. They were a fun group to coach, and I’m looking forward to seeing them develop as runners in the coming years” said Coach Delp.

On Thursday, Oct. 13, the high school teams will run in a combined league meet at Coldwater, South Central. Races start at 4:00.
