The St. John-Hudson Lady Tigers finally broke their drought and came up with a win playing against the Kinsley Coyotes 25-22, 25-20 last Tuesday at Kinsley.
Playing against the 21-3 and third ranked in 1A La Crosse Leopards in the earlier match, the Tigers lost in two sets 16-25, 15-25.
For much of the first set, the Tigers the Coyotes were switching leads, tying four times 1-1, 4-4, 6-6, and 9-9. After the fifth tie 10-10, the Coyotes went in front on a four point run and led 10-14.
The teams kept on battling as the momentum kept shifting, the Tigers down by three 18-21 (after a score correction). St. John’s head coach Trish Wade rallied her ladies during a timeout, and whatever she said must have worked as the Lady Tigers took the next six volleys, leading 24-21.
The Coyotes added a point, followed by the Tigers finishing things off for a 25-22 first set win.
The second set was a little bit easier for the Lady Tigers.
Except for a 1-1 tie, the Tigers led the entire way and won the set 25-20. St. John had several opportunities to put the set away but didn’t. The closest the Tigers got was late in the game leading Kinsley by nine 24-15.
St. John’s Tara Nelson served up an ace fairly close to the end of the set.
Playing against the La Crosse Leopards in the first match, the Lady Tigers were leading most of the time halfway through. The ties kept on adding up 1-1, 2-2, 4-4, 5-5, 6-6, 7-7, 8-8 and 12-12. La Crosse then took charge, outscoring the Tigers 4-11 and won the set 16-25.
Miranda Garner served up an ace late in the set.
St. John was behind the entire second set.
Down by four 2-6, Nelson’s ace helped close the gap 6-8. The Leopards followed with three and four point bursts, La Crosse wins the second set 15-25 and the match.
During all this, in the south court, the St. John-Hudson Junior Varsity made it perfect by defeating La Crosse 16–25, 25–13, 15–11, and defeated Kinsley 25–20, 25–18.
St. John’s next competition will be the Central Prairie League Volleyball Tournament held at Kinsley this Saturday.
The teams participating in the all-day affair are La Crosse, Kinsley, Macksville, St. John-Hudson, Otis-Bison, Central Plains, Ness City, Ellinwood and Victoria. The matches start at 9 a.m.
For those who would like to attend the Kansas 2A Volleyball Sub-State coming up on Saturday, Oct. 22, the Lady Tigers will be playing at home. The teams entered are Central Plains, Ellinwood, Inman, Macksville, Medicine Lodge, Moundridge, Pratt-Skyline and St. John-Hudson.
